Интерьвью с Мимохом

Daddys son

Rajiv Vijayakar

Its embarrassing to watch your parents romance says Mimoh Chakraborty whose film Jimmy will release soon.
He’s a chip off the old block in the real sense. Mimoh Chakraborty has all the down-to-earth, warm qualities of his father Mithun Chakraborty that made the latter endure for three decades. Cheerful, ever-smiling and not prone to the faddish macho look common to most new faces, Mimoh also lacks the snooty attitude and brashness common to most of the star-progeny even before they take off. A welcome change, and a true daddy’s son, Mimoh comes across as the epitome of exemplary upbringing.
Excerpts from an interview:

A cliché: did you always want to be an actor, like dad?

I did not! I am immensely interested in Space Science. I love planets and I wanted to be a part of NASA. In school, they would talk about my dad, and that was my first impression of how popular dad was. But our family life was completely normal, and my becoming a star was never on the agenda. For starters, I was very fat— you cannot imagine how much! Around the time when I was 14 and beginning to feel physical attraction, I would have an armful of rakhis on Raksha Bandhan day from all the girls in my class! And I would actually be khush about this! (laughs)

So when did the great change happen?

Then much later, B Subhash, who is very close to my father from the times of Disco Dancer, called up dad and expressed a wish to work with me. I remember that even when he called I was digging into a MacDonald burger! (Laughs again)
Dad asked me to consider the option if I wanted. ‘Try a diet!'’he told me. The next 2 to 3 years went on self-discipline and diet and my motivation slowly increased as my figure started becoming normal. So I went off for a month’s course to learn acting at the New York Film Academy.

What was dad'’s advice to you when you embarked on this career?

Dad told me to give 100 per cent to whatever I did. '’Be honest to yourself, your work and your family,’ he said. I adore the way he works— unlike many other actors who are good at specific aspects, dad is a switch-on-switch-off actor who was a dream dancer, good at action and also terrific at acting. If you have noticed, dad’s biggest asset is his range. He never prepared for any role, whether he was playing ‘Ramakrishna Paramhans’ or a goonda, but he instinctively understood his character.

Despite being a star-son you faced rough weather - your first film did not even take off, and Jimmy, which will be your first release, got delayed.

Well, two films never took off, but Jimmy wasn’t delayed. It was my first film, so I had to be satisfied with it. We added a song later and re-shot two songs. Bappa Lahiri has composed some of the music, which is quite fitting because his father Bappi Lahiri gave my father career-defining hit songs in Suraksha and Disco Dancer.

We heard that you were injured too on the sets of this film.

Yes, I pulled a muscle on my right leg. The rehearsals were perfect after I refused a double, but during the actual shot I overdid the part! And do you know what, when I called up and told dad about it from the sets, he said, ‘Is your left leg alright?’ and when I said it was, he told me to ensure that the shooting was not interrupted. That’s how professional he is!

Are you planning your career moves?

It’s like this, someone who always plans never enjoys and vice-versa. My funda is that if I earn Rs 3000, I enjoy Rs 1500 and save the same amount. I have already signed Popcorn Entertainment’s Loot, an action comedy with Suniel Shetty, Govinda and Javed Jaffrey. I am also doing Hamilton House, a period thriller, Salim (Akhtar)’s next in which I am a rock star and a film called India Rocks.

What is Jimmy all about?

Jimmy is an action thriller. Raj N Sippy is directing it and I am paired with a new girl, Vivana, who— let me tell you — is better than me! I play a car engineer who is a DJ at night. Then one incident changes his life.

Was the title deliberate - since ‘Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy’ is a hit song of your dad?

Yes it was. Sohail Khan suggested the idea as people identify the song with dad. But by the time the film'’s shoot had ended, it became an emotional bond for me too.

Your mom Yogeeta Bali too has been a top star. What has she to say about you?

She is my frank critic. But you know what? I never watch her films— I cannot watch her romancing other heroes! With Dad, it’s okay, though that sounds chauvinistic! (Laughs)

But dad and mom did movies together - so you can watch her in them.

No way! It’s embarrassing to watch your parents romance! (Guffaws).

And who are the other actors you admire?

I am a great fan of Sunny Deol ( ) as I am an action film buff. I love the way Hrithik Roshan and Shahid Kapoor dance. And Priyanka Chopra is my favourite actress!

Govinda insecure over Mimoh?
Author: Amul Sharma Date: 09 Apr 2008

Warns Loot director against giving meatier lines to Mithun's son

There’s never a dull moment with Govinda, whose unpredictable activities on the sets of his films leave all his co-stars flummoxed.

Best lines, please!

On the sets on Loot, the actor-turned-MP was not too pleased with the amount of footage being given to Mimoh by debutant director Rajnish Thakur. He told the Rajnish to make sure he got the best lines or else!

The director came up with a plan of his own to shoot the film in the manner he wants to. He shoots everything like Govinda wants it, and then re-shoots the portions with Mimoh in the senior actor’s absence.

Insecure

A source on the sets reveals, “Govinda has put Rajnish through hell. This has shocked one and all on the sets because it was Govinda who recommended Mithun’s son for the part! Now he is getting insecure and bad-mouthing the newcomer and is even going around telling people close to him how Mimoh is not the right choice for the movie.”

The source further adds, “Chi Chi warned the director that he wouldn’t shoot until Mimoh’s lines were given to him, as he was the star of the film. The producer and the director tried to reason with the actor but it was all in vain. So now we shoot a particular sequence in the film the Govinda way and then the next morning, Mimoh is called early on the sets and he does lines from the previous night as it is in the script.”

Chi Chi sure is in for a surprise once the film releases.

Че-то я ниче не пОняла... Пишут, что Говинда на съемках LOOT с Мимошкой требует, чтобы режиссер передал реплики Мимоха ему, и вообще всячески ущемляет его интересы... Даже не знаю, что и думать...

Fans will make us the best, says SRK - Countdown to Knight Riders’ debut

Lokendra Pratap Sahi

Mumbai, April 9: Shah Rukh Khan’s association with Calcutta actually began decades ago when, as a masscom student at the Jamia Millia Islamia University, he chose the city to be the theme of his audio-visual presentation.

Bollywood’s badshah has, of course, renewed ties with his ownership of the Kolkata Knight Riders. The team is among the more high profile ones in the path-breaking Indian Premier League (IPL).

“I think that AV presentation went off very well and I’m hoping that my latest association is just as successful. I’d like the fans to turn out in huge numbers and, even if we aren’t the best team, their support will make us into one,” a grinning Shah Rukh told The Telegraph this evening.

Speaking in his top-of-the-line silver BMW, during the hour-long drive from Goregaon’s Film City to his Bandra Bandstand residence, Shah Rukh added: “I realise that the countdown to our first match has begun, but I don’t have much of a role now.… It’s almost time to get on to the park and start playing. Time to get on with the job instead of looking at what’s done and what’s not done.”

The Knight Riders’ first game is on the opening day, April 18, in Bangalore.
Being a hands-on owner, Shah Rukh has put in enough sweat and tears to match the effort seen in his blockbusters. Over the years, there have been quite a few.

“I’m a little tired, I must say. I didn’t expect so many hurdles. I’m passionate about everything I do and this IPL thing hasn’t been any different. Believe me, I’m not in it to make money. Surely, I don’t need to own a cricket team for that,” Shah Rukh said, lighting yet another cigarette.

One such “hurdle” is the entertainment tax being levied by the Bengal government. “If an exemption isn’t given, then I won’t be able to entertain fans at the Eden with a song-and-dance routine during the break between innings.

“The tax could amount to around Rs 1 crore for every match, assuming it’s a full house in each of the seven home games. A lot of my friends want to perform... Kareena (Kapoor), Rani (Mukerji). But I’d like to treat them as professionals and pay their fees. Mohali, I believe, has already got an exemption,” Shah Rukh pointed out.

An appeal has been made to the government, but Shah Rukh hasn’t personally spoken to anybody in authority.

“Look, I’m not good at these things. I don’t seek favours and, equally, nobody wants favours from me. Somebody in the administration could, out of goodwill, sanction something.… A week later, however, I wouldn’t like headlines saying an exception was made. I don’t do anything illegal and wouldn’t encourage anything which isn’t proper,” Shah Rukh said.

Incidentally, till Shah Rukh heard about Mithun Chakraborty’s takeover of the Calcutta team in the Indian Cricket League, he’d been wanting to invite him for the Knight Riders’ first match in Calcutta, on April 20. “I realise that can’t be done now,” he regretted.

Mithun won’t be there, but the Kareenas certainly will be around — even if they don’t perform on a makeshift stage.

Mithun Chakraborty gives shot despite fever
Bombay News.Net
Friday 11th April, 2008 (IANS)

Fifty-plus Mithun Chakraborty saved director Aseem Samanta from a lot of trouble when he shot for 'Don Muthuswami' despite being ill.

During the beginning of the second schedule of the film Mithun fell ill, but to everybody's surprise, the actor managed to come on location on the third day and shot for 14 hours continuously to finish the shooting on time.

'He had to shoot for almost 14 hours in one day and he was still very weak, but he completed the schedule. The performance delivered was, as usual, outstanding,' said Samanta.

'Since the dates of Hrishita Bhatt and Rohit Roy were committed for another film, no way could we extend the shooting. We thought that we would have to work out an additional schedule and arrange for everybody's dates again. This was going to delay the film by a minimum one month,' he added.

The film is about a hardcore Don played by Mithun. On the advice of his dying father, Don decides to alter and improve his image.

Yugpurush

Ever since the lukewarm response to Minister Fatakesto, Mithun Chakraborty has been more visible off the big screen than on it. This week, he resurfaces with his Poila Baisakh offering — Satyameva Jayate. Mithun tells t2 what had kept him busy all this while...

You haven’t had a Tolly release in the past six months...

Actually I am very busy in Mumbai. There are some very good films there, so I couldn’t devote much time to Tollywood. Satyameva Jayate is my first release this year.

What’s keeping you busy in Mumbai?

Well, I am doing a lot of films. There’s Luck with Sanjay Dutt and Chandni Chowk To China with Akshay Kumar. There’s UTV’s Phir Kabhi opposite Dimple Kapadia. Zindagi Tere Naam with Ranjita is still on the floors. Then there’s Ghosla and Don Muthuswamy.

What is Satyameva Jayate all about?

It’s a film about truth and honesty. There’s a belief that the year 2000 marked the end of kalyug and the start of satyayug. The film explores whether this is a myth or a reality. I play Vinayak, a police constable who fights for justice and goes through a lot in life.

Is your role any different from Fatakesto?

It’s very different from MLA and Minister Fatakesto. Why would I do similar films? It is very wrong to think that Vinayak is like Fatakesto. Fatakesto is a cult figure now. Satyameva Jayate has a different story. To me, all films are different because the execution of films is different.

Did you cut down on Tolly films because Minister Fatakesto didn’t do as well as MLA Fatakesto?

No, not at all. How can two films do similar business? How can you all ask a question like this? If one film does well, is there any rule that the next has to repeat the same business. The reason why I chose to do a lot of films last year was because I wanted to show that even regional films can do very good business.

You are launching two new girls in Satyameva...

Yes, Priyadarshini and Taniya. Both were participants in Zee Bangla’s Dance Bangla Dance. Priyadarshini plays a journalist, while Taniya is the villain’s girlfriend.

What made you choose them?

I felt they would suit the roles. Besides, both are fantastic dancers. See, when I launch someone I always look for the X-factor. Priyadarshini and Taniya have the spark to make it big.

I had also launched Shilpa Shirodkar and suggested Madhuri Dixit’s name to a couple of producers after someone came to me with her photograph. I worked opposite her in Prem Pratigya, Mujrim, Elaka and Pyar Ka Devta. At that time, producers were reluctant to cast her but I knew she would do well.

Any Bengali film on the floors?

I am doing an untitled film by Haranath Chakraborty. It’s a comedy and we will start shooting as soon as I am through with my Hindi films.

Mimoh's Dancing Gives 'jitters' To Papa Mithun Chakraborty

Sunday 04th of May 2008

Although Bollywood actor Mithun Chakraborty dotes on his son Mimoh, he is getting apprehensive of being overshadowed by him.

Mimoh's debut-making movie, 'Jimmy' is releasing two weeks after 'Don Muthuswamy', in which Mithun plays the title role, that hits the screens May 9.

Mithun fears that 'Jimmy', in which Mimoh shows off his amazing dancing skills, might overshadow his own film and give him a tough time in consolidating his second innings in Bollywood.

'Mimoh is so good at dancing that even I got jitters when I saw a trial screening of 'Jimmy' recently. And, mind you, I have not been a bad dancer in my earlier innings in Hindi movies,' Mithun told IANS here.

Now that his son has turned an actor, is there any chance of both working together in movies in the near future?

'No chance,' Mithun remarked promptly. 'I will not be able to keep pace with Mimoh's dancing vim and vigour. Plus, I am sure Mimoh would not like to be overshadowed by my histrionic abilities.'

Does it mean that he does not rate Mimoh very high as an actor?

'It takes a performer at least 10 years to learn the ropes of acting. Mimoh has just begun his career. He has to go through the grind before he calls himself an actor in the true sense,' Mithun said matter-of-factly.

Incidentally, this is the same Mithun who had created Bollywood history in 1976 by bagging the National Award for Best Actor in his debut movie 'Mrigaya', made by Mrinal Sen.

In Ashim Samanta's 'Don Muthuswamy,' Mithun plays the role of a reformed don. How Muthuswamy's life goes for a toss after he relinquishes his notorious career of crime is, in essence, what the movie is about.

A comedy, it is Mithun's eighth movie for Samanta's banner. Although the banner has produced over 65 movies so far, 'Don Muthuswamy' is only its second comedy in four and a half decades since it produced 'Naughty Boy' starring Kishore Kumar and Kalpana in 1962.

Mithun said his role in 'Don Muthuswamy' constantly reminded him of Krishan Iyer MA, the character of a bungling don he played in Mukul Anand-directed 'Agneepath' 18 years ago.

When Ashim had gone to meet Mithun in Ooty with the story idea of a reformed don, he had planned to fashion the character after a Mumbai don.

Though the movie was being planned as a comedy, Mithun refused to play a Mumbai don. So, Ashim had to give the character a Tamil identity.

But does Mithun enjoy playing comic characters?

'Well, I am an actor. So I should be able to play all kinds of roles. It's true that I have not worked in many comedies. But I enjoyed playing 'Don Muthuswamy'. In fact, having lived in Tamil Nadu for long, I incorporated into the character some Tamil mannerisms I observed in some Tamil employees in my hotel in Ooty,' he said.

Mithun has a line-up of movies, which will keep him busy in Mumbai for at least two to three years. Some of these are 'Luck', 'Ghosla', 'Phir Kabhie', 'Zindagi Tere Naam', 'Chandni Chowk to China' and 'C-Company'.

'The characters I am playing in these movies are the kinds that I had never played earlier. I am surprised that I am being offered to play these at this stage. I want to specially mention 'Phir Kabhie', being jointly produced by Ronnie Screwvala and Pradeep Guha. I am playing a 60-year-old man opposite Dimple Kapadia in this movie,' the actor said.

He said though he would give cent percent to the movies to make his second innings in Bollywood as successful and fulfilling as the previous one, he would shoot only 25 days in a month.

'The rest five days I will devote to my hotel in Ooty, which has a 450-strong staff and needs my attention and guidance,' he said.

Ever since he shifted to Ooty in the mid-1990s, Mithun had refused to come down to Mumbai to shoot for his movies. The producers, who had signed him, had to plan their shooting schedules as per the actor's convenience until recently.

While in 'Don Muthuswamy' Mithun plays a comic character, in his soon-to-be released Bengali movie 'Ekti Nadir Katha', directed by Bollywood art director Samir Chandra, he emotes a diametrically opposite character, proving his versatility.

After almost 35 years in filmdom since he debuted in 'Mrigaya', acting has now got into his skin. He had also set a new dancing trend in his 1983 movie, 'Disco Dancer'.

'Disco Dancer', in fact, became his son Mimoh's day school for dancing when he grew up. The student is now threatening to prove one up on his teacher.

Book recounts Russian penchant for Indian films

Mumbai: We always knew about Russia’s love for Indian cinema, but now there is a book that has finally answers to all the whens, whys and hows behind this fan following.

Leave Disco Dancer Alone is a book that documents the impact of Indian Cinema on Russia especially in the post-Stalin era.

Though, it may sound boring to some, the book is filled with interesting trivia about how the first Indian film festival in Russia was organised in 1954, screening films like Aawara and Andhiyan, with millions of people in attendance, to film articles and posters of Indian films in Russian.

That only goes to prove that language is no barrier when is comes to Indian films.
Based on first-hand research, the book analyses the reason behind this rage. The socialist films of that era and their idealistic heroes struck a chord in the Russian heartland.

Actors like Raj Kapoor, Nargis, Durga Khote (м-дя... только наиболее продвинутые российские поклонники инд. кино смогут восстановить в памяти, ХТО это вообще...), Sharmila Tagore, Amitabh Bachchan, Mithun Chakraborty and many more, were just as loved in the land of the Soviets as they were in their motherland.

But if you think Indian fans were crazy, actor Mithun Chakraborty, who appears on the cover of the book sets you right.
“They (Russian fans) are crazier (ТОЧНО!!!!!!!!!),” he said.
“When Disco Dancer came out, it was a rage,” Mithun recounted. “I was really amazed, I thought there is a generation gap, but I was surprised that even today they are watching this film.”

So, if you want a glimpse of the Russian craze for Indian cinema, you can pick up this book straight off the shelf.
