'I'll put my money on a bigger game’

From stardom to displaying the fervour of a businessman, yesteryear superstar, Mithun Chakraborty is making moves to rake in the moolah.

That he holds a stake in an ICL team is known to us. What made him sponsor the team? Mithun says, “I am a sportsperson and support any sport that is promising.”

Ask Mithun what does the term ‘promising’ means in his dictionary and his reply’s surprising, “Money. There’s crores involved in the game of cricket, particularly. In cricket when the stake is high, even the revenue that we generate out of it is very high.”

After making big bucks in the hospitality industry in Tamil Nadu, Mithun’s quest to seek more from the market hasn’t been quenched as he admits, “All I mean is business. And when I saw tremendous potential in the T20 module, I came forward to bet on it.”
Mithun is equally passionate about football as well. “I also hold a stake in a football team called Howrah Union,” he continues.

His plans to coin and deliver stratagems seems to spillover to other sports too. “I would not like to disclose which other game I will put my money in. But mark my words, I certainly will bet on a bigger and even more promising sport,” he confesses.

The six thinking hats principle, it seems is working magnificently well in case of Mithun. Business apart, he is continuing to do movies too. “I have seven movies in the pipeline including the forthcoming movie Heroes, starring Preity Zinta.” Ask him if cricket crept into the film set with Preity representing his arch rival, Mithun says, “These are two different ball games and our interests do not overlap.”

Mithun further adds that he has taken meticulous efforts to design the wardrobe of his team and is all praise for his team. “The coach of my team is a tiger and the captain is a tiger too. My team is indomitable as we have players like Craig McMillan and Hamish Marshall.” And he is enthusiastic about the team anthem too. “Listen to that. It has all the high octane notes of a typical Led Zeppelin number,” he says.

When it comes to the game, Mithun feels the game itself speaks volumes and it’s precisely the same philosophy of thought that he applies to acting too.

Preity Zinta, Dino Morea, Sohail Khan, Riya Sen and Vatsal Seth are gung ho about director Samir Karnik's Heroes, a unique tale about the spirit of the Indian armed forces personnel and their families

Sohail: I was completely floored when Samir narrated the script of Heroes to me.

Dino: You are right! It blew my mind as well. The script was the sole reason for eleven actors to agree to do the film! It was not only the message that the film would put across to the audience, but also how well each character was conceived, that moved each one of us, including senior actors like Mithun Chakraborty, Salman Khan, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol.

Vatsal: The thread is the army and Samir has captured the never-say-die spirit of our armed forces and their families, through Sohail and me. Two thoroughly spoiled brats, travel on their mobikes to meet these families for the film they are making for their filmmaking course.

Riya: My respect for these officers went up by leaps and bounds after working in Heroes. And I am sure it will have the same impact on the audience.

Vatsal: 100 per cent! People will definitely be touched by how not only the officers but their close ones too are so heroic.

Riya: Like Preity who plays an army officer's (Salman Khan) wife. She is shown to be a woman of substance who holds the family together when her husband is away on duty.

Preity: Not only that, I also drive a tractor in the fields!

Sohail: I know, you looked grand sitting there! But tell me was it tough to drive that heavy-duty vehicle?

Preity: Not really, we were shooting that portion in Punjab and the locals taught me how to sit on it and drive it. But more intriguing than that was acquiring the mannerisms and body-language of a rural Punjabi woman.

Dino: I believe you attended Anupam Kher's acting school for that.

Preity: Yes. Since Anupam Kher belongs to that part of India, he was familiar with the body-language of the people living there. He prepared me really well to play Kuljeet Kaur and playing her part was a learning experience.

Dino: I worked on my character of an army officer by recalling the officers, I had observed when growing up in Bangalore. I kept in mind their straight and proud walk, how they nursed their drinks and the way they spoke.

Sohail: You were perfect for the role. The audience will enjoy the camaraderie between you and your army officer father, played by Mithunda. It's a very unique combo.

Dino: It was the first time I was working with him. Saying that he is a great actor and that I learnt a lot from him would be like stating the obvious. What I discovered is that he is a rock-star in real life. When we were shooting in Ladakh we would hire motorbikes after pack-up and head to the city to visit the monasteries. After that it would be a meal at a local restaurant. It was great fun.

Vatsal: What Mithunda would do for me was really touching. Knowing that I am a vegetarian and there was always a dearth of vegetables in Ladakh he would pick up bhindis and potatoes whenever he saw them in the market and stir up some scrumptious dishes for me. He would also make sure that Sohail who is into fitness had his share of his daily proteins.

Riya: I cannot get over the Badmash launde party number in which you and Sohail act as strippers. The audience is going to drool over that one.

Vatsal: They should, after all two great-looking guys doing the strip-tease! And Riya you are a very quiet person, who smiles a lot, in real life. I like the way you executed your character who is so talkative.

Riya: It's all thanks to Samir. He had spent a lot of time developing the characters. He was very clear about what he wanted from all of us and that made it very easy.

Vatsal: Yes, Samir made playing our characters easy, but I had to work on my looks. My character is older than I am, so I grew my hair and stubble and of course, talk and behave in a more mature fashion. I also had to learn how to ride the bike. Sohail is a biker and was so good with the machine. I could balance it after two falls!

Sohail: You were also pretty nervous on the first day of the shoot. Even though we were in Ladakh, I could see you were sweating.

Vatsal: You are right! But you helped me get over it very fast!

Dino: Both of you shared a great chemistry.

Sohail: We all did. I also liked the rapport Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol shared as brothers serving the Air-Force. And how Salman bhai and Preity look fabulous as the Sikh couple. I am impatiently waiting to see the audience reaction to Heroes!

Preity: We all are!

Mithun revels in team effort

AHMEDABAD: Sourav Ganguly may be bidding adieu to international cricket but he still has two years of cricket left in him, observed Bollywood star and Royal Bengal Tigers’ owner Mithun Chakraborty.

Mithun was in Ahmedabad to cheer his team against hosts Ahmedabad Rockets on Wednesday.

“Ganguly has announced his retirement but I feel he has a couple of years left in him. This is a very graceful exit as he has scored a century in the last Test series of his career,” Mithunda said.

On if he intends to bring Ganguly into the team, Mithun said, “He has been a great cricketer and a very good ambassador of the game… I would love to make him part of my team but it is difficult.”

The Royal Bengal Tigers’ owner actually enjoys the longer versions of the game. “T20 is very entertaining and a tricky game and I am thrilled by it. But Test matches have lately added a glamorous chapter in the history of Indian cricket,” Mithun said, referring to India’s thumping victory over Australia. Interestingly, the actor enjoys watching Ricky Ponting batting.

“I am a big fan of Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar and Ponting,” Mithun, who patronises Howrah Indian Football Club in Kolkata, said.

Meanwhile, happy with his team’s performance in the ongoing ICL, Mithun said, “I believe in giving hundred per cent and they are doing that. I won’t praise an individual because it has been a total team effort. I am satisfied with my captain (Craig McMillan) and coach (Daryll Cullinan). I hope they carry on their form till the very end.”

However, he felt teams like Chennai Superstars, Hyderabad Heroes and Chandigarh Lions are favourites too. “Hyderabad, Chennai and Chandigarh have very good players and are capable of winning.”

Mithun acknowledged crowd support and infrastructure. “This has been a wonderful outing. I guess the best ground I have seen. The atmosphere has been very good in and outside the stadium,” he signed out.

Injured Mithun still a daredevil in movies

New Delhi, Oct 25 (IANS) Some stars never age. Actor Mithun Chakraborty is one of them. In the capital to cheer his Indian Cricket League (ICL) team, the Royal Bengal Tigers, which played the Dhaka Warriors in Gurgaon Saturday, the actor showed that he was still a do-it-yourself daredevil and stuntman at 58 - even if it meant a few cuts and bruises.

Mithun hurt himself while jumping off a helicopter while shooting for the film “Luck” in Durban in South Africa and injured his hand.

“I jumped from a helicopter without realising that the safety mat had been displaced and there was a boulder. I crashed on it,” said the actor, just out of the hospital after a minor surgery - with his hand in a sling and bruises on his brow.

“I am on sedatives. There was a blood clot but I ignored it in South Africa. The wound worsened and I went to a clinic after landing in Mumbai and removed it. Everyone thinks it’s easy to be a movie star, but it’s tough being a hero,” he told reporters Saturday.

Mithun plays a senior army officer with Sanjay Dutt in “Luck”, directed by Soham Shah and slated for release next year.

“I have 12 movies awaiting release this year, but you must watch ‘Heroes’ in which I play a very interesting character of a father. You must watch ‘Heroes’,” the actor said.

“Heroes”, directed by Samir Karnik, is being billed as one of the most inspiring movies this season.

Mithun feels that today’s stars have an edge over the older crop of action heroes, who had to perform several stunts themselves. “Moviemaking in Bollywood is technically more advanced now with more safety nets. Today’s action heroes are well-protected,” he said.

The actor is also part of several projects in the Bengali movie industry. “Two movies that I am working on at the moment are ‘Sukno Lanka’ (Dry Chilly) and ‘Handa-Bhonda’ with Aritro Dutta Banik, the tiny star of Zee TV’s ‘Dance Bangla Dance’,” Mithun told IANS.

“Tollygunge is making great movies. Talent abounds in the Bengali movie industry,” he said.

The star is also promoting the Bengal Football Academy, along with the Bengal contingent for the ICL.

“I must begin with little things now and then move on to bigger projects in Bengal,” said the actor, for whom both “cricket and movies are all about luck”.

Asked about his most enduring performance in a recent film, he said, “I have put in my best for ‘Ekti Nodir Galpo’ (Story of a River).”

The movie, directed by samir Chanda, is based on a story by Bengali novelist Sunil Gangopadhyay.

We all know that Mithun Chakraborty played the role of a laughing don in DON MUTHUSWAMY but it will be amusing to know that he had a bad laughing experience during the shooting of Samir Karnik's HEROES!

As per Mithun Chakraborty himself, during the Uttarakhand shooting schedule of HEROES, Sohail Khan and Vatsal Seth went berserk while relating some hilarious jokes to him. Infact, Mithun's laughter became uncontrolled, so much so that his heart beat got affected and he had to be taken to a hospital! (Молодцы, ниче не скажешь! )After that Mithun told Sohail and Vatsal (jokingly) that from next time onwards they must make him cry rather than laugh!

Well, we are quite sure that after seeing the good to decent opening of HEROES (that released last Friday), that too during the normally dull pre–'Diwali' phase, Mithun da must be smiling, if not laughing!
