Mithun Chakraborty will play Salman Khan’s father in Vijay Galani’s Veer, directed by Anil Sharma. The role demands that Mithunda goes bare-chested for a major part of the film. As a result, the actor has to religiously work out till the movie goes on the floors in August.
Challenge hai
It is learnt that Mithun wanted to take up a challenge and Veer seems to be perfect for him. He has told the makers that he will hit the gym everyday for two hours to get the desired physique. The film also has him do a lot of horseback riding as well.
Director Anil Sharma says, “We have signed Mithunda to play Salman’s father in Veer. It is an extremely challenging role. He is supposed to get fit for the movie. Mithun has installed a lot of gym equipment at home to work out.”
Hunting locations
Veer, a period action flick, has been penned by Salman. A new girl will be cast opposite the actor. The producer and the director are currently in London location-hunting. Some British actors are also being signed for the project.

I Dont Want to Impress Anybody: Mithun

Life has come full circle for the man who started his career with an art film, and went on to become the original disco dancer of Bollywood.
Today when his own son has just made a debut in films and he is also awaiting his next solo release Don Muthuswamy after a very long gap, Mithun Chakraborty says that he has reached a point where he doesn't have to prove anything to anyone. NT gets up, close and personal with the versatile star.
Ask him about his role in Don Muthuswamy and Mithun says, "It's a rib-tickling comedy, which is about a mafia don who wants to mend his ways. Unfortunately, his troubles begin the moment he bids adieu to his Dongiri." After Shaukeen this is the first time he's doing a film, which is an out-and-out comedy. Was he comfortable doing this loud, comic role? "I have done more than 200 films and almost every film of mine had a dash of comedy, tragedy, action and romance. So, comedy is just another genre for me," says Mithun da. At this age, which are the actresses who look good with him? "I think Dimple Kapadia looks very good with me and our on-screen chemistry will surely be appreciated in our film Phir Kabhie, which will be released after a couple of months. My old friend Ranjeeta also looks good with me," says he.
And how does he rate his son Mimoh as an actor? To this he says, "His movie has just been released. He has a lot to learn from his seniors but as a dancer he's at least 25 times better than me."
With Raj thackeray and his band of boys pooh-poohing the role of 'outsiders' in Maharashtra, does Mithun feel insecure in the state? He answers this in a succinct manner: "I am obliged to Maharashtra for fulfilling all my dreams. I didn't even have food to eat and this place gave me everything that I have today. My head will always be bowed in front of this land, but it's a mutual compliment. I have also given my best to this place and nobody has a right to point fingers at me or others of my ilk. You give respect, you get respect."Ask him whether he has any plans to direct a film and he says candidly, "I have some plans but I will reveal them when the time comes." And will we also get to see Mithun da penning his autobiography sometime in future? "That's not my cup of tea. Those who want to make an impression write their autobiographies. And I don't want to impress anybody at this stage," says he.

After playing a media baron in Guru, Mithun Chakraborty is back as a don in Don Muthuswami. While promoting his latest film, the man with an amazing mass-appeal chats candidly about his other roles as a businessman and a sportsperson and his son Mimoh
What excites you more, playing a lead after a long time, or your son Mimoh making his debut in Jimmy?
I’m excited about my film Don… as I am playing a South Indian character after 18 years, but I’m tense about Mimoh as he is making his debut.
Did you not want to launch him?
No! Stardom is a pain and if you get it suddenly it can be dangerous. I wanted Mimoh to find his place under the sun himself, the way I had to fight for everything I achieved.
You are playing a title-role after a long time.
Yes, this is like a second coming and a very interesting phase of my life where filmmakers are once again writing roles keeping me in mind. In Don Muthuswami I play a hardcore don who on the advice of his dying father decides to change his lifestyle and image. Hilarious situations arise as he tries to transform himself from a don to Sir Muthuswami.
Your South Indian character sounds similar to the bungling don you played in Agneepath.
You can say it is an extension of my part in Agneepath! Ashim Samanta the director loved my character in that film and wanted to base it on him, so except for working on certain mannerisms like his gait and incorporating some Tamil mannerisms I observed in my staff in Ooty, I had to recall my role as Krishnan Iyer MA.
Hrishitaa Bhatt said that she found it hard to match up to your energy while shooting for an energetic dance number in the film.
The dance scene was for just one wedding sequence, otherwise it is not a dancing role but more of a comic character. As for my energy level I am an actor and conscious about my fitness. Anyway, as a dancer now you must watch Mimoh. He has his own unique style and is way ahead of me when it comes to dancing.
How is he as an actor?
It will take him a couple of years to even come close to me in that department!
So when will we see father and son together on screen?
Several producers have been wanting to cast us together, but I don’t think it is the right time as yet. Let him do a couple of films to hone his acting skills as I am sure he would not like to be overshadowed by me, though I will never be able to match up to his vigour!
What role do you dream about doing at this juncture?
I never dream of doing any roles. Instead I turn the roles I am doing into dream roles (ИМЕННО ТАК И ЕСТЬ!!!! ). At the peak of my career when I was known as a disco dancer I played Ramakrishna Paramhans in the film Swami Vivekananda and even got a national award for it!
You are hosting a television show Dance Bangla Dance Junior in Kolkata. Can we expect to see you as a judge on a Hindi show?
There is nothing in the offing….. but you never know!
The Bengal Football Academy was your brainchild, and now you have bought the Kolkata Tigers of the ICL team. Anything more on the sports front?
Kolkata is a city of sports, and I have always been a sports lover. Of course the idea to buy the team was not only because sports is a passion but from the business angle as well. My dream is to have my own club and I can see it materialising even if it is coming in a roundabout way!
How do you manage to look after your Monarch chain of hotels?
I have three hotels, one in Ooty and one in Mysore and Madhumalai each, then there is also a school in Coimbatore. I was attending to my hotel business when I took some years off from acting. Now I take off five to six days every month to attend to that business and then I am back in Mumbai for my shootings.
Will we see your wife Yogeeta Bali on the screen again?
You will have to ask her, though I find her quite content in looking after the family. My second son is keen on being a director but my youngest son is still undecided as to what he wants to do and my daughter is too young.
Your career seems to have taken off in a big way now.
I don’t know whether it has taken off in a big way but I have landed some interesting projects. I am playing a lawyer in Subhash Ghai’s Yuvraaj though it’s a cameo. In Chandni Chowk To China I have an action-oriented role, then there is Zindagi Tere Naam, Phir Kabhi , Ghosla, Ekta Kapoor’s C-Kompany, the action thriller Luck, and I also may be part of Salman Khan’s Veer. I must mention that in Phir Kabhi I play a 60-year- old opposite Dimple Kapadia.
How do you juggle all your activities?
I am an early riser and my day kicks off by playing with my dogs and other four-legged friends…yes, my house is like a mini-zoo. I do a bit of gardening to rejuvenate myself and then I am off for the day.

Why did you take a break from films? Every woman takes a break from her career at a certain stage in life. I started very young. So I called it quits when I left for the US. My son was small and he needed me. I did not want to miss out on his growing up years.
What made you say yes to Zindagi Tere Naam? Director Ashu Trikha sounded very convincing when he approached me. Working with Mithun (Chakraborty) after a long time was another draw. It felt as if I have never left the camera. Besides, my son has now grown up.
Would you have said yes, had you been paired opposite any actor other than Mithun Chakraborty? I might have said yes. But I would not have settled for any actor of lesser calibre (А ТО!!!!!!! ).
How excited were you about acting with him again? I can’t say that I was jumping with joy. At my age, I cannot do that. I was definitely thrilled for old time’s sake.
How was it shooting with him? It was great (ЕЩЕ БЫ!!!!! ). They had come down to Pune to shoot (Ranjeeta is currently based in Pune). We know each other since the FTII days and he is a dear friend. It’s almost as if we had grown up together. I have seen him in his good and bad days. He behaved with me just the way he used to do earlier. We shared a lot of light moments.
How confident are you of recreating the old Mithun-Ranjeeta magic on screen? That’s for the audience to tell. This film is not like our earlier successful films, Suraksha or Tarana. However, everything depends on a film’s show at the box office. When a film clicks, everything seems right and people say that the magic is there.
How are you feeling with the release date —May 30—nearing? I am not nervous. I have seen ups and downs. At the most I won’t get any more films. But then, I’m not here to make a career.
Tell us about your role. The film’s a mature love story and I play a lady who loses her memory. Her husband tries his best to bring it back.
After Zindagi Tere Naam, would you be doing more films? It all depends on the offers that I get. But I won’t lose any sleep if I don’t get any. I’m quite settled in life. I am relaxing, doing yoga.

Mithun Chakbraborty is far from defeated by his son's tame debut and his own non-starter Don Muthuswamy that opened this week. Everyone's favourite 'Disco Dancer' and 'Gun Master G-9' from the 1970s Mithun Chakraborty is back in action. This is one of the busiest phases in the 70s' superstar's career.
And one of the roles he's doing requires him to threaten Ekta Kapoor! "That's right," laughs Mithun-da. “I've a seriously funny role in Ekta Kapoor's C Kkompany. I play this small-time don called Dattu Satellite who has a fascination for TV artistes. I even go and warn Ekta Kapoor against torturing her TV artistes. I'm having so much fun with varied characters. I enjoyed playing a funny gangster in Don Muthuswamy. Imagine a Bengali playing a South Indian don! I've played a South Indian before in Agneepath."
It was a very emotional journey down memory lane for Mithun-da when he met up with his steadiest and most adored co-star Ranjita Kaur in Pune some time ago. Says the emotional actor, “I met Robby in Pune very recently. She lives there now. Together we visited the Pune Film Institute where my whole journey as an actor began. I went to touch and kiss the number on the room where I stayed. It was a very emotional journey."
Mithun-da gets sentimental about all his co-stars. "I was friendly with all my co-stars. I've worked with all of them from Rekha to Shabana to Zeenat to Parveen. I even worked with Sharmila Tagoreji in a Bengali film directed by Uttam Kumar where she had a double role with me and Uttam-da."
Filmmakers are today willing to write roles especially for Mithun-da. "I've just finished Phir Kabhi with Dimple Kapadia and Rati Agnihotri produced by Culture Company and UTV. It's a very different love story about a happily married man whose first love returns after his wife dies. His grand-daughter plays Cupid. My character keeps talking to his dead wife. I've done a lot of films with Dimple. She's a pal. And she's given a great performance."
Mithun-da is partial about his co-stars. "Robby (Ranjeeta) and Padmini Kolhapure were my very favourite co-stars and buddies. Padmini drifted away after she got married. But Robby and I are still buddies. You'll be surprised to see we still fight like we used to." The pair featured in over a dozen films in the 1980s. Among them, Tarana and Surakshaa were big hits. Now the 50-plus pair is coming back together. "Ashu Trikha's Zindagi Tere Naam brings me and Ranjita Kaur together after many years. It was an extremely nostalgic experience for both of us. Interestingly, there's a flashback where two youngsters who look like us will play our parts."
And Mithun-da's 'Gun-Master' days are not over. In his last release My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves he played newcomer Nikhil Dwivedi's guru. "I played a Catholic priest. But he was no ordinary priest. I didn't only preach. I also fought. In the end, I showed the protagonist my martial arts skill to fight injustice. It was a very interesting role. The director E. Niwas is a very good friend of mine. And the debutant Nikhil Dwivedi is unconventional, just like I was when I came in." As for Mimoh, "He'll fight his way to his destiny. No one can stop him."

И одна из исполняемых им ролей потребовала от него угроз в адрес Экты Капур! «Это правда», - смеется Митхун. – «Я вам серьезно говорю – это очень смешная роль в C KKOMPANY Экты Капур. Я играю забавного дона по имени Дату Спутник (в смысле, спутниковое ТВ), который является сумасшедшим фанатом телевидения и артистов, которые там работают. Я даже отправился к Экте Капур и потребовал под угрозой расправы, чтобы она больше не мучила своих подопечных на ТВ. Мне неизменно доставляет огромное удовольствие работа над подобными ролями. Мне также понравилось играть уморительного гангстера в DON MUTTHUSWAMI. Только представьте себе – бенгалец, играющий роль тамильского дона! Я уже играл южноиндийца в AGNEEPATH».
Когда Митхун некоторое время назад встретил в Пуне свою постоянную и обожаемую партнершу по ранним фильмам Ранджиту Каур, это стало для него эмоциональной встряской – воспоминания нахлынули с новой силой… Растроганный актер говорит: «Я встретил Робби в Пуне совсем недавно. Она теперь живет там. Мы ведь вместе учились в киноинституте в Пуне, как раз тогда, когда моя актерская карьера только начиналась. Я пошел в общежитие только для того, чтобы дотронуться и поцеловать номер комнаты, где я когда-то жил (все-таки, слава Богу, так до конца жизнь и не «вытравила» эмоциональность и ранимость… )… Эти воспоминания очень волнующи…»
Когда речь заходит о его партнершах, Митхун говорит с чувством: «У меня всегда были прекрасные дружеские отношения со всеми моими партнершами (ЕСТЕССССНО!!!!! И не только, я полагаю, дружеские! ) Я работал чуть ли не со всеми – от Рекхи до Шабаны Азми, Зинат и Парвин. Я даже пересекался с Шармилой Тагор в фильме на бенгали, который ставил Уттам Кумар, где она исполняла две роли – со мной и Уттамом».
Сегодня сценаристы и режиссеры пишут сценарии и снимают фильмы в расчете именно на Митхуна. «Недавно мы закончили работу над фильмом PHIR KABHI с Димпл Кападия и Рати Агнихотри, продюсерами которого выступили Culture Company и UTV. Это очень нетрадиционная история любви о счастливом в браке человеке, встречающем свою первую любовь после смерти жены. Его внучку играет Купид (??? ХТО такая??? ). Мой герой даже после смерти жены разговаривает с ней… Я работал с Димпл над многими проектами. Она очень хороший мой друг. И сыграла она просто потрясающе».
Вместе с тем, Митхун достаточно пристрастен в отношении своих партнерш. «Робби (Ранджита) и Падмини Колхапур были моими лучшими партнершами и отличными друзьями. Падмини ушла из кино после замужества. Ну, а с Ранджитой мы до сих пор поддерживаем дружеские отношения. Вы не поверите, но мы до сих пор спорим на съемочной площадке, как это бывало прежде!» Эту пару зрители могли видеть в двух десятках фильмов в 80-х годах. А TARAANA и SURAKKSHA стали настоящими хитами. Сегодня пара «за 50» снова на экране. «Фильм Ашу Трикхи ZINDAGI TERE NAAM свел меня и Ранджиту на одной съемочной площадке спустя много лет. Ностальгические чувства охватили нас обоих. Замечу, что в фильме есть и молодая пара – в каком-то смысле, наши герои, но много лет назад».
Кстати, золотые дни Митхуна, когда он снимался в таких фильмах, как SURAKKSHA, не канули в Лету! В одном из последних по времени своих релизов MERA NAAM ANTHONY GONSALVES он играет духовного наставника «новичка» Никхила Двиведи. «Я исполняю весьма необычную роль католического священника – это не какой-то «сухарь», читающий проповеди. Я также и боец. В финале фильма я демонстрирую своему подопечному приемы рукопашного боя, дабы восстановить справедливость. Это была очень интересная роль (но, зараза, ООООООЧЕНЬ маленькая!!!!!!!! ). Режиссер фильма Нивас – очень хороший мой друг. А дебютант Никхил Двиведи своей нестандартной для киногероя внешностью мне напомнил меня самого в начале карьеры». Что касается Мимоха, «он будет сам пробивать себе дорогу в жизни. И ничто его не остановит (дай Бог! )»

My chemistry with Mithun will once again mesmerize audience – Ranjeeta
Laila Majnu famed Laila alias Ranjeeta is again back, after a long span, to the screen with Ashu Trikha’s Zindegi Tere Naam.
And the interesting part of the name is that the actress is promising to offer her life to none but her old screen-aasique Mithun Chakraborty. Let us know the reason and little more about the film from the veteran actress herself…
Q. Was there any especial reason behind accepting this film? A. Yeah, there were actually lots of reasons behind accepting the film. The proposal for the film came to me at a time while I was completely free. I thought I had accomplished my responsibilities towards my son very well. Then I could think about some time for myself. The character offered to me was really good and along with that character Ashu Trikha was another reason behind signing the film. I had experience of working with his father also.
Q. What’s most unusual about this flick? A. It’s my character. It’s really excellent. Audience will surely enjoy several shades of acting through this character. I think these all elements are enough to make the film interesting.
Q. The film is based on romantic love story. What would you say about the love story? A. I am quite excited that my comeback in films is happening with love story. In Bollywood, love stories have always been playing the role of true magician.
Q. The tagline of the film says, “Har mahan prem ke pichhe mahan kahani hoti hai (every great love has a great story to tell)”. How do you relate to this line? A. To many aspects. I am from the age of romanticism. So no one can understand love better than me.
Q. How are you enjoying your comeback? A. I am feeling really good. Truly speaking I am feeling like I have never left it behind. I am feeling no difference posing in front of the camera after such a long span. Generally people get very nervous giving their first shot but there was nothing like that for me.
Q. What would you like to say about your new co-stars? Have you ever given them any tips? A. They all are very professional, understanding and well acquainted with today’s working environment. As far as providing tips is concerned, who am I to tips them? Everyone learns from his or her own experience. Even I also learned everything from my directors. I am really lucky for having chance to work with all the good directors from the very beginning on my career.
Q. Audience has witnessed you and Mithun in few superb movies. How do you have your expectations from this film? A. It’s completely dependant on the audience. But I have complete faith in the film. As, you know, actors usually have from each of their flicks.
Q. Talking about chemistry, will we have chance to witness chemistry between you and Mithun? As though, chemistry covers lot in a film. A. Absolutely. It’s only chemistry on screen that works. Lack of chemistry between characters can never attract audience. And I have complete faith in my and Mithun’s chemistry to work again in this film.
Q. Have you signed any other film? A. No. I’ll sign more films but depending on nature of offers I get.
Q. What’s your expectation about characters from Bollywood? A. I would love to portray all those characters that despite being of my age have some interesting aspects in them. I feel, a character, whether it’s of sixteen year’s or of hundred, will always be a character.
Anjum Rizvi's new film FAST FORWARD Bollywood Trade News Network
Anjum Rizvi is all set with a brand new musical venture titled FAST FORWARD, to be directed by Zaighan Ali. This youth oriented film will star Mithun Chakraborthy, son Mimoh Chakraborthy, Adhyayan Suman (Shekhar suman's son), Siddhant Karnick, Sheena Shahabai (Sadhna Singh's daughter), and will be introducing Sabina Sheema , who is from Anupam Kher's Active Prepares school and winner of this year's Zee cine stars. The music of the film will be by famous DJ Akbar Sami, with choreography by well known Sonia Jaffer of 'Jhalak Dikh LaJa' fame. The shooting for this musical will start in September and the release is set for next year.
The other credits include Lyrics by Javed Akhtar, screenplay/dialogues by Raahil Qaazi, Editing by Shree Narayan Singh and sound recording by Rakesh Ranjan.

Mithun's soccer association triggers war in CAB Kolkata, July 24 - Bollywood actor Mithun Chakraborty's foray into local soccer has become an election issue in the Cricket Association of Bengal -, with the dissidents owing allegiance to former president Jagmohan Dalmiya demanding action against an affiliate unit close to the ruling group for getting associated with the Indian Cricket League -.
A day after Mithun's ICL team Royal Bengal Tigers signed a five-year sponsorship agreement with Kolkata's first division soccer club Howrah Union Wednesday, the Dalmiya loyalists accused the CAB of 'double standards' as it had banned senior Bengal cricketers for inking deals with the Zee-promoted ICL.
'They have shut the doors of the Eden dressing room on players like Deep Dasgupta and Avishek Jhunjhunwala. These players are not allowed to play for Bengal. How can they look the other way when the Howrah Union has entered into a tie-up with a team that is a participant in the ICL?' asked Dalmiya camp general secretary and former Board of Control for Cricket in India - joint secretary Goutam Dasgupta.
He said the matter would be raised with 'full force' in the July 29 CAB annual general meeting, where Dalmiya would take on incumbent Prasun Mukherjee for the president's post.
'It's a good election plank for us. There is a BCCI directive that an affiliate unit can't have any truck with an association or individual related in any way with the ICL,' Dasgupta told IANS.
The ruling group and the Dalmiya-led opposition are locked in an intense battle for control of the CAB, and have put up rival candidates for every post.
The BCCI-promoted Indian Premier League - and ZEE's ICL are rivals.
The BCCI came down hard on the ICL last year, even going to the extent of stopping pension and other facilities to former stars like Kapil Dev, Erapalli Prasanna, Sandip Patil and others who joined ICL.
What has irked the dissidents more is the fact that Howrah Union general secretary Indranath Dey is a CAB vice-president who is seeking re-election with support from the ruling faction.
However, Mukherjee brushed aside the allegation. 'This is a non-issue. CAB is concerned with cricket. Why should we bother about soccer?'
Dey said he had not violated any BCCI norm. 'Our arrangement is with a separate company floated by Chakraborty, Royal Bengal Sports'.
But the release given at the Bollywood star's media meet Wednesday night clearly spelt out ICL's involvement. 'Mithun scripts ICL booster for West Bengal sports,' said the heading.
Besides, it had quotes from Himangshu Mody, business head of ICL.
The release quoted Mithun as saying: 'The announcement - cements my association with ICL...'.
As part of the deal, the Royal Bengal Sports would provide support to Howrah Union for infrastructure building, player recruitment and also training facilities.
Mithun is also scheduled to visit Portugal and Mexico to recruit foreign players.
The association would begin in the next 2008-09 season.

Durga Puja rights sold to US company Press Trust of India Friday, August 08, 2008, (Kolkata) Taking corporatisation of Durga Puja festival to a new height, a prominent puja committee in Kolkata has sold the rights of the celebrations to a US company and roped in a Bollywood superstar as its brand ambassador.
The entire expenses of the Badamtala Ashar Sangha Puja in south Kolkata will be borne by the US company 'Media Morphosis' which will promote it in the media and the web.
This marked a departure from the practice in vogue in which a puja committee would get different sponsors, but itself manage the resources.
In another trend-setting move, the organisers have got superstar Mithun Chakraborty to endorse the puja which has been creating waves over the years for its aesthetic novelty fetching it several prizes.

Ранджита, почему ваша героиня идет на такую жертву, и расскажите немного о фильме, нам бы хотелось услышать это непосредственно от вас…. Корр.: Что побудило Вас принять предложение сниматься в этом фильме? Р.: Да, на самом деле имелось много причин принять это предложение. Основная причина в том, что предложение о фильме я получила в тот момент, когда я была свободна. Свободна в том плане, что я выполнила мои обязанности по отношению к моему сыну в плане его воспитания. И тогда я могла располагать каким-то временем непосредственно для меня. Роль, которую мне предложил Ашу Трикхас, была на самом деле замечательной, но была ещё одна причина, по которой я не могла отказаться - когда-то я работала с его отцом. Я тоже училась у своих режиссеров, на самом деле мне очень повезло, я работала с замечательными режиссерами с самого начала моей карьеры в кино. Кор.: Зрители видели не очень много стоящих картин, где вы снимались с Митхуном, что вы ждете от этой картины? Р.: Всё будет зависеть от зрителя, но я очень надеюсь на успех! Корр.: Теперь поговорим о любви. Зрители смогут увидеть на экране ваше взаимопонимание с Митхуном – как по-вашему, эта любовь, она присутствует только в фильме? Р.: Абсолютно. Мы сыграли эту любовь.
